  1. I had never heard of Dennis Lehane, but after this, I definitely plan to read more of his work. He is an outstanding writer who knows how to grab your attention from the very beginning. Amazing characterizations---Lehane makes these characters come to life, and by the middle of the book, I felt like I'd known them my whole life. The story is gripping, leaving you wanting to get to the next chapter to see what happens next, never knowing what to expect. I felt completely absorbed by this book--he definitely brings more to the usual psychological thriller through his use of detail, vivid descriptions and unpredictable twists. You feel as though you are living it along with the characters! Finally, Mystic River reads like one of Bruce Springsteen's old songs---songs about survival, harsh lives and hope in the midst of struggle. I'm anxiously awaiting Lehane's next brilliant novel!
